Are You Taking Good Care of Your Teeth? | Walnut Creek Dentist

cleaning your teeth dentist walnut creekWe all know the basics of daily dental hygiene; it is ingrained in us when we cut our first tooth. Brush, floss, dental visits – it’s all very textbook. Or is it? It is very likely that you may be doing something incorrectly, and that may cause you issues in the future. So instead of keeping our old habits, let’s make sure that we are doing it right, so we pass our dental visits with flying colors. The following are the most common mistakes we make when taking care of our smiles – how many do you do?

What you use to brush. You may not think what you use to brush your teeth is important, but it really is. And it isn’t a brand issue. Many think that using a hard-bristled toothbrush is cleaning better than a soft-bristled version, but those hard bristles can harm your teeth and gums over time.

How you brush. Because it is more likely that you will develop dental issues along the gum line, it is wise to keep your brush at a 45-degree angle. If you are brushing in a horizontal motion, you can actually dull out your teeth, so instead of brushing back and forth over your teeth, try moving in a circular motion.

The number of times you brush. If you only brush once a day, you are allowing bacteria to grow and plaque to develop in your mouth. Conversely, brushing too often can wear down enamel and irritate gums. At the most, three times a day is good, the minimum being after breakfast and before bed.
