Ever wonder why we use Toothpaste? | Walnut Creek, CA

Ever wondered why we use toothpaste? Toothpaste helps to clean our teeth of plaque and food debris without damaging our delicate enamel. Toothpaste contains fluoride which helps to protect enamel. Some also include ingredients to reduce plaque. Toothpaste is a huge part of preventive dental care.

Toothpaste is made up of several ingredients that help to clean your teeth, such as:

  • Abrasives – helps to remove stains and plaque.
  • Detergents – this is what makes the toothpaste foam. It helps to dislodge food debris.
  • Humectants – gives the toothpaste texture and moisture.
  • Thickeners – helps the toothpaste stay on your brush and squeeze out of the tube that way it does.
  • Preservatives, Flavoring and Coloring: these give toothpaste the look, and taste it has.

In addition to your normal preventive dental care routine at home, be sure to visit Walnut Creek Prosthodontics for dental cleanings and checkups. Call for an appointment today at 925-934-5526. Visit our website at www.barmbyfrickprosthodontics.com.

Cosmetic Dentistry | Porcelain Venners vs Bonding | Serving Danville, CA

cosmetic dentistry

Is your smile not what you want it to be? If you would like to change your smile cosmetic dentists Dr. Barmby and Dr. Frick can help. They offer many cosmetic dentistry procedures including the most popular, bonding and porcelain veneers. But what is the difference between the two?

Both bonding and veneers have similarities. They both are used to cover dental imperfections. However, the procedures are quite different.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding uses a smooth tooth colored solution which is applied to teeth. It covers stains, and fills in small chips and gaps. After the dental bonding solution has been applied and shaped a specialized dental light is used to harden the bonding material. Once the bonding solution is dried and cured additional layers may be applied depending on your situation. When the process is complete the tooth is then polished. Bonding is used on patients who need one or two teeth corrected.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are fabricated from a solid piece of porcelain. They fit over the front and underside of your tooth covering the entire surface of visible tooth. Veneers can be fitted to lengthen or widen teeth to close gaps or fill in chips. Porcelain veneers are generally used for patients who have several cosmetic problems or want their entire set of front facing teeth made over.

Cosmetic Dentistry found in your Refrigerator! | Walnut Creek, CA

cosmetic dentistryAccording to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, certain foods naturally cleanse, brighten, and defend against bacteria that can harm your teeth and gums. In addition, Dr. Barmby DDS and Dr. Frick DMD of Walnut Creek Prosthodontics encourage a healthy diet to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

The following 10 foods were recommended by the academy for a healthy, brighter smile.

  • Pineapples can help whiten teeth. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain, which acts as a natural stain remover. Bromelain also helps break up plaque.
  • Ginger can protect against periodontal disease, an inflammatory process that causes the loss of bone and supportive connective tissue in your mouth.
  • Carrots contain vitamin A, which is needed for healthy tooth enamel. Eating them raw stimulates saliva, your mouth’s natural cleanser.
  • Basil is a natural antibiotic that reduces bacteria in the mouth.
  • Cheese is rich in protein, calcium, and phosphorus, all of which help reduce acid in your mouth.
  • Sesame seeds help “scrub” away the plaque on your teeth. Chewing nuts can also provide this coarse, scrubbing action. Sesame seeds also contain bone and teeth-strengthening calcium.
  • Shiitake mushrooms contain a compound called lentinan, which inhibits bacteria from growing in your mouth.
  • Onions contain the sulfur compounds, thiosulfinates and thiosulfonates, which reduce bacteria that cause tooth decay. Eating them raw is a must as cooking will destroy these tooth-friendly compounds.
  • Salmon not only provides calcium but also vitamin D, another nutrient needed for healthy bones and teeth.
  • Broccoli contains iron, which helps form an acid-resistant film or barrier that can protect the enamel of your teeth.

Sensitive Teeth can mean big problems | Walnut Creek, CA

Are your teeth sensitive?  If eating cold and hot items sometimes cause you to stop in your tracks from the intense pain, there is probably an underlying reason.

The top layer of your teeth, called the enamel, protects the interior of your teeth from the harsh elements of the food you consume.  When the enamel is damaged, you feel pain because the underlying layers are more sensitive.

Sometimes the damage can be underneath the gum as well.  The layer of protection, called the cementum can wear away just like the enamel.  Typically you will not be aware of the reason for the pain; it usually takes a dentist to exam your mouth to discover the problem for you.  A few common reasons for sensitive teeth include cavities, broken fillings, gum disease or broken teeth.

If you have sensitive teeth, give us a call right away to get to the root of the problem.   Call Dr. Barmby and Dr. Frick at (925) 934-5526 or visit our website.

Taking care of your Porcelain Veneers | Walnut Creek, CA

The longevity of your porcelain veneers greatly depends on how well you take care of them. Dr. Barmby and Dr. Frick of Walnut Creek, CA offer some suggestions for properly taking care of your porcelain veneers.

Good Oral Care at Home: Brush and floss daily with a nonabrasive toothpaste containing fluoride. Good oral care at home helps prevent periodontitis which can cause your gums to recede. Veneers are placed right at the gum line. If your gums do start to recede the appearance of your veneers could be compromised.

Avoid excessive force: No biting your fingernails, hairpins, ice or hard candy. These types of things can break or dislodge a veneer.

No clenching and grinding your teeth: By grinding your teeth your veneers can be chipped or broken due to the force generated by these actions. If you suffer from bruxism at night, talk to Dr. Barmby and Dr. Frick about a night guard to protect your teeth and veneers.

Steer Clear of Staining Foods and Drink: Although porcelain veneers are very resistant to staining the cement used to hold them in place can stain over time. Try to avoid coffee, tea, soda, wine and tobacco.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness month | Walnut Creek, CA

Oral Cancer Screening

April is Oral Cancer Awareness month.  Dr. Barmby and Dr. Frick know that most people are not aware of the statistics associated with Oral Cancer. Approximately 42,000 people in the U.S. will be newly diagnosed with Oral Cancer this year alone. And as you are well aware, your dentist is often the first line of defense against oral cancer, through the process of early detection and discovery.

Oral Cancer will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 42,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. (Approximately 57%) This is a number which has not significantly improved in decades. The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cancers which we hear about on a regular basis such as cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, cancer of the testes, and endocrine system cancers such as thyroid, or skin cancer (malignant melanoma). Although smoking and tobacco use is still a major risk factor for Oral Cancer, the fastest growing segment for Oral Cancer patients are young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus.

If you broaden the definition of oral cancers to include cancer of the larynx, for which the risk factors are the same, the numbers of diagnosed cases grow to approximately 54,000 individuals and 13,500 deaths per year in the U.S. alone. Worldwide the problem is much greater, with over 640,000 new cases being found each year. Oral Cancers are part of a group of cancers frequently referred to as head and neck cancers, and of all head and neck cancers they comprise about 85% of that category. Brain cancer is a cancer category unto itself, and is not included in the head and neck cancer group.
